The Midlands public health laboratory: services

The public health laboratory for the Midlands is based in Birmingham.

The Birmingham laboratory is home to:

  • the regional centre for mycobacteriology which provides tuberculosis screening and diagnosis for the east and west Midlands
  • the antiviral unit (AVU), the national testing facility for the HIV and herpes viruses

The Birmingham microbiology laboratory is also part of the Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network (CDRN) service for England.
