Overview
Schools gigabit broadband is a government-funded programme to ensure all schools in England can access a fibre connection by the end of 2030.
We do this by providing a gigabit-capable broadband connection to those schools where there are no commercially provided or other government-funded options available.
Our programme was announced as part of our Education estates strategy.
Who can take part
We are working to identify schools where no commercially provided or other government-funded options are available or planned.
This may include schools where fibre is available locally but not to the school’s premises.
From September 2026, the Department for Education (DfE) will start to contact schools that meet our requirements. If you need further support, contact us through Manage your education estate.
What’s involved
Our suppliers will provide a gigabit-capable broadband connection to your school if you qualify for our help.
You will remain responsible for buying and paying for your own broadband service with an internet service provider of your choice.
Funding
Our programme is funded from the £325 million DfE budget to improve school connectivity for the 2026 to 2030 financial years.
We are building on the £39 million DfE and Building Digital UK investment already made between 2023 and 2025.
