The Future Kinetic Effects and Weapons Systems Programme is the focal point and integration hub for weapons-focused science and technology.

Weapons and kinetic military effects are key enablers in the UK having operational advantage and freedom of action. Investment in weapons science and technology (S&T) ensures that our armed forces are able to operate against current and future adversaries, where hybrid warfare is becoming more common.

The Future Kinetic Effects and Weapons Systems Programme is the focal point and integration hub for weapons-focused S&T.

The programme generates advanced technology to support UK forces’ freedom of action and significant operational advantage at an affordable price, spanning weapon guidance, navigation, control, human integration, networking and propulsion. This ensures that the UK can deliver non-traditional and novel military effects when conventional forces are inappropriate.

The programme has three core themes:

  • Hypersonic and directed energy weapons – novel options for future warfighting
  • Conventional energetics
  • Complex weapons technologies and systems to support future operations within highly contested and constrained environments

A critical element of the programme is ensuring that weapons S&T meets multiple requirements and therefore remains affordable. Decision support and analysis underpins capability planning, force development and acquisitions.
