Before you start
To use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you’ll need to find software that:
- creates digital records
- sends HMRC quarterly updates
- can submit your tax return

What you will need
If you’re a sole trader or a landlord, you’ll be asked a few questions to get a personalised list of software options.
You’ll need to know:
- the qualifying income you need to report in quarterly updates — this is your turnover from self-employment and property income from the previous tax year (turnover is the total before you deduct expenses)
- any other income sources you need to report in your tax return
- if you want to create new digital records or connect to existing ones
- your accounting period (standard tax year, calendar update periods or neither)
