Aims that form part of this priority are to:

  • maintain a balance in the constitutional relationship which reflects the rights and responsibilities of both the UK and the Cayman Islands as outlined in the 2012 Overseas Territories White Paper
  • work closely with other government departments to fulfil the UK government’s collective responsibility for the Cayman Islands
  • work closely with Cayman Islands Government to minimise the vulnerability of the Cayman Islands to climate change, economic changes, international crime, natural disasters and other developments
  • manage the effect of new international obligations on the Cayman Islands

Freedom of Information

The Governor’s Office holds UK Government information which is subject to the UK Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Cayman Islands Government information which is subject to the Cayman Islands Freedom of Information Law 2007.

Births, deaths and marriages

Information on how you can register a birth or death which occurred overseas, and legal documents for couples marrying or entering into civil partnerships abroad.

Passports and emergency travel documents

How to renew or replace your British passport when outside of the UK and information on getting replacement travel documents if your passport is lost or stolen. Please note that applications for standard emergency travel documents should be made online to the British High Commission in Kingston. Through the Cayman Islands Passport and Corporate Services Office, we are able to issue an Emergency Passport which entitles the bearer to return directly to the UK on the BA flight.

Legalisation service

How to get official confirmation that your UK public documentation is genuine so it can be accepted by foreign authorities. The UK does not require any documents to be legalised for use within the UK.

Correspondence Policy of the Governor’s Office

We will endeavour to acknowledge all correspondence within 5 working days of receipt and to reply substantively within 20 working days of receipt. If we are unable to meet this latter deadline - for example if we have to seek legal advice or to consult more widely - we will inform you of this.

Out of normal working hours service: please note, the Cayman Islands is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom so the Governor's Office does not provide consular services.The first port of call for British Nationals in distress should be the local Cayman authorities, such as the police and hospital. The Governor's Office can only help in cases of genuine emergency and where the local authorities are unable to assist.
