HGV driver shortage: UK government response

The shortage of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers is a widespread problem affecting the UK, European countries and the USA. It’s caused by a range of factors, including the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and an ageing workforce.


The UK government is providing funding to help train new HGV drivers, increasing the number of driving tests available for HGV drivers and encouraging former drivers to return to driving.
