National flu report summary: 5 March 2020 (week 10)

1. Main points: data up to week 9, 2020

Data up to week 9 (ending 05 March 2020) shows:

  • during week 9, influenza activity decreased or remained stable across most indicators
  • the impact of flu on healthcare services is low impact levels for hospitalisations and baseline levels for ICU/HDU influenza admissions
  • the Department of Health & Social Care has issued an alert on the prescription of antiviral medicines by GPs

2. Surveillance scheme summaries

2.1 Community

Data from outbreak surveillance shows:

  • there have been 29 new acute respiratory outbreaks reported in the past 7 days
  • 22 outbreaks were reported from care homes where 3 tested positive for influenza
  • 2 outbreaks were reported from hospitals where 1 tested positive for influenza A
  • 3 outbreaks were reported from schools with no test results available
  • the remaining 2 outbreaks were reported from the Other settings category with no test results available

2.2 Primary care

Data from primary care surveillance shows:

  • The overall weekly influenza-like illness (ILI) rate was 8.4 per 100,000 registered population in participating GP practices for England and is below baseline threshold levels, an increase from 6.7 per 100,000 in the previous week *In the devolved administrations, ILI rates were at baseline levels in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for week 9

2.3 Secondary care

Data from secondary care surveillance shows:

  • hospitalisation rate observed was within low impact levels, with a rate of 1.11 per 100,000 in week 9 compared to 0.88 per 100,000 trust catchment population in the previous week, for England (18 NHS Trusts)
  • ICU and HDU admission rate observed was below baseline levels, with a rate of 0.06 per 100,000 in week 9 compared to 0.10 per 100,000 trust catchment population in the previous week, for England (139 out of 143 NHS Trusts)
  • there were no new influenza confirmed admission reported from the 6 severe respiratory failure centres in the UK

2.4 All-cause mortality

Data from all-cause mortality surveillance shows:

  • no statistically significant excess all-cause mortality by week of death was seen overall and by region in England in week 9
  • in the devolved administrations, no statistically significant excess all-cause mortality for all ages was observed for Wales and Northern Ireland in week 9 2020 and for Scotland in week 7 2020

2.5 Microbiological surveillance

Data from microbiological surveillance shows:

  • in primary care, 1 sample tested positive for influenza (1 influenza B) through the UK GP sentinel swabbing schemes in week 9, with an overall positivity of 53.3%
  • a total of 215 influenza detections were recorded through the DataMart scheme (63 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, 38 influenza A(H3), 50 influenza A(not subtyped) and 64 influenza B) with an overall positivity of 5.2% and below baseline threshold levels

2.6 Vaccination

Data from the GP patient, healthcare worker and primary school-age children flu vaccine uptake programmes shows:

  • the last weekly data for the season was published on 30 January 2020 and includes data up to week 4 2020 (week ending 26 January 2020)

Provisional data from the fourth monthly collection of influenza vaccine uptake by frontline healthcare workers show 72.4% were vaccinated by 31 January 2020, compared to 68.6% vaccinated in the previous season by 31 January 2019

Provisional data from the fourth monthly collection of influenza vaccine uptake for children of school years reception to year 6 shows 64.2% in school year reception age, 63.5% in school year 1 age, 62.6% in school year 2 age, 60.6% in school year 3 age, 59.6% in school year 4 age, 57.2% in school year 5 and 55.1% in school year 6 age were vaccinated by 31 January 2020

3. International situation

  • in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, respiratory illness indicators and influenza activity remained elevated overall
  • in the temperate zones of the southern hemisphere, influenza activity remained at interseasonal levels
  • worldwide, seasonal influenza A viruses accounted for the majority of detections.
