Our statistical practice is regulated by the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR). OSR sets the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics that all producers of official statistics should adhere to. In 2024, domestic transport accounted for:

  • 110.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e), similar to 2023 (0.2% increase from 110.2 MtCO2e in 2023). This was a decrease of 10% compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019

  • 30% of total domestic greenhouse gas emissions in the United Kingdom (UK)

  • 29% of domestic nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions

  • 26% of domestic airborne particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 micrometres (PM2.5) emissions

  • 22% of domestic airborne particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micrometres (PM10) emissions
