Reported road casualties Great Britain: involving driving for work
Estimates of the number of collisions involving at least one driver who is driving for work, based on the journey purpose recorded within STATS19 or assumptions based on vehicle type.

We are currently developing the methodology used to produce these statistics, and have published a proposed new methodology and the resulting estimates alongside the existing figures above. These new estimates are considered to be official statistics in development. Subject to further testing of the method, and any feedback from users, we intend to adopt the new approach for the annual statistics for 2026, scheduled for publication in summer 2027. This report presents the Department for Transport’s analysis of road collisions recorded in STATS19 where at least one driver was driving for work.
It builds on previous research by University College London (UCL), using a methodology that reclassifies vehicles and casualties based on journey purpose and vehicle type.
This represents an initial attempt to improve on what is recorded in the journey purpose category in STATS19, with some reasonable assumptions. However, further work to explore additional assumptions and methodologies is possible, and it is hoped to develop this analysis further. In September 2026, revised figures including a method to apportion unknown casualties have been published as ‘statistics in development’, with a plan to adopt this new methodology from summer 2027, subject to user feedback and further testing.
