This statistical release summarises the latest quarterly statistics on corporate and individual insolvencies in England and Wales. It also includes related statistics for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The number of corporate and individual insolvencies has decreased in England and Wales, according to latest quarterly statistics.

Statistics for October to December 2013 show that the number of company liquidations decreased by 7.4% compared with July to September 2013, and by 7.1% compared with October to December 2012.

Total individual insolvencies decreased by 4.6% in October to December 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. Bankruptcies decreased by 22.2% over this period, and debt relief orders decreased by 13.1%. The number of individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs) increased by 12.3%, with IVAs now making up over half of all individual insolvencies.

Other statistics on insolvencies in England and Wales show that:

  • in October to December 2013, the number of company receiverships and company voluntary arrangements decreased compared with the same period in 2012, but the number of administrations increased

  • in the year ending December 2013, one in 166 active companies (or 0.6% of all active registered companies) went into liquidation, compared with one in 144 in the year ending December 2012

  • in the year ending December 2013, one in 445 adults (or less than 0.25% of the adult population) became insolvent, compared with one in 406 in the year ending December 2012

Related statistics for Scotland and Northern Ireland show that:

  • company liquidations in Scotland in October to December 2013 increased by 20.7%, compared with the same period in 2012. The number of individual insolvencies decreased by 13.7%.

  • company liquidations in Northern Ireland in October to December 2013 decreased by 18.6%, compared with the same period in 2012. The number of individual insolvencies increased by 22.5%.
