This statistical report presents the Forestry Commission’s 6 headline key performance indicators (KPIs) (Official Statistics).

The main findings are:

  • the area of woodland in England at 31 March 2020 is 1,311 thousand hectares. This represents 10.05% of the total area of England
  • 79 hectares of new woodland was created with support from the Rural Development Programme for England in the third quarter of 2020-21. It brings the total area planted with this type of support in the first three quarters of this financial year to 613 hectares
  • there were 14 high priority forest pests in the UK Plant Health Risk Register at 31 December 2020
  • 99.87% of known tree felling in England was carried out with Forestry Commission approval in the year to 31 December 2020
  • 59% of woodland is in active management England at 31 December 2020
  • the forecast cost for 2020-21 of managing the nation’s forests managed by Forestry England is £91.10 per hectare at 30 September 2020, against a target cost of £77.42 per hectare for the year
  • there are 560 businesses operating in the nation’s forests at 31 December 2020
