Energy production, trade and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period September 2024 to November 2024, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

  • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 1.3%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 0.5%. (table ET 1.2)
  • Indigenous energy production fell by 3.9% with falls in the production of all fuels except bioenergy & waste. (table ET 1.1)
  • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 3.6%, with gas up 3.3% but coal down 94%, renewables down 5.3% and nuclear down 3.7%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Renewables provided 43.2% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 39.4%, nuclear at 16.4% and coal at 0.1%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.8 percentage points to 59.6%, whilst fossil fuel share up 0.7 percentage points to 39.8%, with gas meeting the shortfall from nuclear and renewables.* (table ET 5.4)

*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.

Energy prices

Highlights for January 2025 compared to December 2024:

Petrol up 0.5 pence per litre and diesel up 0.8 pence per litre. (table QEP 4.1.1)

Statistics on monthly production, trade and consumption of coal, oil, gas, electricity and total energy include data up to the end of November 2024.

Statistics on average temperatures, heating degree days, wind speeds, sun hours and rainfall include data up to the end of December 2024.

Statistics on energy prices include retail price data and EU comparative data for December 2024, and petrol and diesel data for January 2025.
