Energy Trends and Prices statistical release: 27 March 2025

Energy production, trade and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period November 2024 to January 2025, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

  • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 1.2%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 0.4%. (table ET 1.2)
  • Indigenous energy production fell by 2.1%. (table ET 1.1)
  • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 2.7%, with gas up 12% and nuclear up 4.8% but renewables down 12% .* (table ET 5.4)
  • Renewables provided 43.2% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 42.2% and nuclear at 13.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 3.7 percentage points to 57.0%, whilst fossil fuel share up 3.7 percentage points to 42.4%.* (table ET 5.4)

*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.

Energy prices

Highlights for March 2025 compared to February 2025:

Petrol down 1.7 pence per litre and diesel down 1.5 pence per litre. (table QEP 4.1.1)

Statistics on monthly production, trade and consumption of coal, oil, gas, electricity and total energy include data up to the end of January 2025.

Statistics on average temperatures, heating degree days, wind speeds, sun hours and rainfall include data up to the end of February 2025.

Statistics on energy prices include retail price data and EU comparative data for February 2025, and petrol and diesel data for March 2025.
