Details

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has produced the Spring 2023 wave of the Public Attitudes Tracker (PAT). Previous waves were conducted under the former Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Fieldwork for the Spring 2023 wave took place between 9 March and 6 April 2023 using a push-to-web methodology, covering a sample of 4,410 individuals in the UK. Random probability sampling is used to invite respondents to participate through letters sent out to addresses randomly selected from the postcode address file. They can complete the survey online or on paper.

The topic-based reports include results from Autumn 2021 waves onwards, and comparisons between results are made where possible. However, results from Autumn 2021 onwards cannot be compared with the face-to-face results or online panel results from previous waves, due to selection and measurement effects.

Some topic reports relate to areas which were under the remit of former BEIS and will no longer be updated but are still available. The latest of these are:

A summary of the methodology, introduced in Autumn 2021, is provided in the Technical Overview report available on this page. A more detailed description of the survey methodology used since Autumn 2021, together with core survey metrics for Autumn 2021 to Summer 2022, is available in the Technical Report.

We stopped publishing the PAT datasets from Summer 2022 onwards, with more detailed versions of the datasets available via the Secure Research Service (SRS). We proposed this change alongside the publication of the Spring 2022 PAT and received no comments from users. Instead, we now publish time series and crosstabulations by sex, age, education and region for selected questions.

We will publish the next wave - Summer 2023 - in September 2023. Having reduced the number of questions in removing those which do not fall under the remit of DESNZ, we plan to skip the Autumn 2023 wave and resume from Winter 2023. We will accommodate the energy-related questions usually asked in the Autumn wave in other upcoming waves.

We welcome feedback on the Public Attitudes Tracker. If you have any comments or questions about this publication, or the proposal for the upcoming waves, please contact us at PAT@energysecurity.gov.uk.
