These statistics show the numbers of children living in households in Great Britain where at least one parent or guardian claimed one or more of the following out-of-work benefits at 31 May each year from 2008 to 2016:
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income Support
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
Universal Credit has been included in these statistics for the first time. Only data at 31 May 2016 is available for Universal Credit. For more information, read our guidelines on the use and interpretation of these statistics.

Changed the title of 1 of the data tables from ‘Tables: number of children in out-of-work benefit households by output area, age and benefit type’, to ‘Tables: number of children in out-of-work benefit households by output area and age'. The table was incorrectly titled because DWP does not provide a breakdown by benefit type for output areas. No changes to the data have been made.
