UN Human Rights Council 48: Joint statement on Sudan under Item 10 General Debate
UK International Ambassador for Human Rights Rita French delivered the statement on behalf of a group of countries commending the progress Sudan has achieved on human rights in the past two years, particularly on women’s rights and freedom of religion or belief.

As Sudan transitions off the agenda of this Council, we commend the progress it has achieved on human rights in the past two years, particularly on women’s rights and freedom of religion or belief.
Sudan’s international engagement, particularly since 2019, should be proof to all States of the results that engaging positively with this Council, its monitoring and reporting mandates, and with the OHCHR, can yield. We call on States, particularly those on the agenda of this Council, to take a similar approach.
Sudan’s journey to improve human rights is not over. Delivering on its long-term human rights commitments – including for historically marginalized communities – remains vital to the success of Sudan’s transition to democracy. We call for all parties to implement the Constitutional Declaration and Juba Peace Agreement, and we condemn any attempt to destabilise or undermine this important process.
We call on Sudan to continue cooperating with OHCHR, to build on the positive gains already made, and to establish its National Human Rights Commission with OHCHR’s support as soon as possible. We stand ready to support Sudan in its efforts to realise the full enjoyment by the Sudanese people of all human rights
