UN Human Rights Council 46: Interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on Mali

The UK's International Human Rights Ambassador delivered this statement during the Interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on Mali.

Rita French

Thank you.

The UK thanks the Independent Expert for his report. His findings are deeply concerning. Civilians, including women and children, continue to suffer most from violations and abuses.

We welcome the transitional government’s commitment to implement the peace agreement, and to make it an inclusive process owned by all signatory parties.

However, not enough is being done to tackle impunity for human rights violations and abuses. Political will is necessary to ensure accountability. We call on the transitional government to carry out transparent and fair investigations and to progress these through the justice system. Demonstrating a commitment to achieving justice is key to improving the security situation and restoring state authority and trust in state institutions.

We also call on the transitional government to tackle all forms of discrimination against women, including gender-based violence.

The UK is supporting efforts to build stability and protect civilians through deployment to MINUSMA, humanitarian programmes, and work to encourage an integrated approach to stabilisation.

The continued increase in abuses and violations is unacceptable.

We welcome the Independent Expert’s views on what more the international community can do to hold those responsible to account?

Thank you.
