Working as a driving instructor survey: 2024 results
Published 3 December 2024
Applies to England, Scotland and Wales
Introduction
This report summarises research carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) about working as an approved driving instructor (ADI).
It aims to:
- find out how important things are changing over time
- get views on topical issues
This research is done regularly. Between 2021 and 2022 it was done twice a year. From 2023, this survey has been done annually. The annual survey is normally done in June. The 2024 survey was deferred to September due to the general election.
We sent the survey to ADIs on 1 September 2024. The survey closed on 30 September 2024.
Where the same question was asked in previous surveys, this report compares the changes over time.
You can read the results of previous surveys about working as an ADI.
How representative the data is of all ADIs
There were 5,620 responses to this survey. At the end of March 2024 there were 40,984 ADIs. This means that about 13.7% of all ADIs completed the survey.
The data in the report has a confidence level of 99% within +/- 2 percentage points.
This means that if we repeated the survey with different samples of all ADIs, 99 times out of 100, the results would be within +/- 2 percentage points of the figures shown in this report.
