Published 10 August 2023

Applies to England, Scotland and Wales

Introduction

This report summarises research carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) about working as an approved driving instructor (ADI).

It aims to:

  • find out how important things are changing over time
  • get views on topical issues

This research is done regularly. Since June 2021, it’s been done about twice a year. From June 2023, this survey will be done annually in June of each year.

We sent the survey to ADIs on 1 June 2023. The survey closed on 30 June 2023.

At the end of March 2023, there were 39,550 ADIs. Overall, there were 5,795 responses to this survey - 14.7% of all ADIs.

You can read the results of previous surveys about working as an ADI.

Where the same question was asked in previous surveys, this report compares the changes over time.
