Working as a driving instructor survey: 2023 results

Introduction
This report summarises research carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) about working as an approved driving instructor (ADI).
It aims to:
- find out how important things are changing over time
- get views on topical issues
This research is done regularly. Since June 2021, it’s been done about twice a year. From June 2023, this survey will be done annually in June of each year.
We sent the survey to ADIs on 1 June 2023. The survey closed on 30 June 2023.
At the end of March 2023, there were 39,550 ADIs. Overall, there were 5,795 responses to this survey - 14.7% of all ADIs.
You can read the results of previous surveys about working as an ADI.
Where the same question was asked in previous surveys, this report compares the changes over time.
Summary of findings
Weekly working hours
62.2% of ADIs spend at least 25 hours working as an ADI each week
Driving lesson prices
£31 to £35 is the most common price charged for a one-hour lesson - 46.6% of ADIs charge this
Availability for driving lessons
29.8% of ADIs currently have availability to take on new pupils
Job satisfaction
90.8% of ADIs agree the role gives them a sense of personal accomplishment
Future plans
85.2% of ADIs intend to continue in the role for at least the next year
Professional development
53.6% of ADIs have done some form of continuing professional development (CPD) in the last 12 months
Health
59.3% of ADIs have experienced musculoskeletal problems in the last 12 months
