In 2025, a work group commissioned by the Lord Chancellor’s Welsh Language Standing Committee ran 2 one-week surveys to gather data on the use of Welsh in the criminal, family and civil courts in Wales.
This release provides analysis on the use of Welsh during hearings, including where Welsh was spoken and use of Welsh-language documents, instances of box work in Welsh, and how this varied between regions in Wales over the survey periods. This data is being published to support discussion at the Legislation, Justice and Constitution Committee of the Senedd on 02 February 2026.
