An update has been published regarding the European Commission’s Working Group meeting on nutrition and health claims held on 18 June 2012 an informal meeting about flexibility of wording of health claims held 19 June 2012.

The working group meeting on health claims on 18 June 2012 covered agenda items including:

  1. recent EFSA opinions on health claims based on newly developed scientific evidence and
  2. progress on further assessment of general function health claims.  It also yielded interesting discussions on traditionally-used generic descriptors that could be construed as health claims; general, non-specific health claims; and draft Commission guidance on interpreting Article 10 of the claims Regulation.

Following on from this meeting, representatives of some member states met informally on 19 June 2012 to discuss a common approach to advising food businesses about flexibility of wording for health claims.
