Journalism is essential to democracy; it informs the public, holds power to account, and challenges misinformation and disinformation. Yet UK journalists increasingly face threats, harassment, and intimidation that compromise their ability to work freely and safely. To build an up‑to‑date picture of these risks, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport commissioned Alma Economics to assess the prevalence, nature, and impact of safety concerns affecting journalists. The research used a mixed‑methods approach: a national online survey of 531 journalists to identify patterns and scale, alongside 55 in‑depth, trauma‑informed interviews exploring lived experiences, impacts, and reporting behaviours.
