We’re targeting benefit cheats

An image which highlights the consequences of being caught as a benefit thief: criminal record, benefits stopped, and other penalties.

At the Department for Work and Pensions we’re determined not to let benefit cheats get away with it. The majority of claimants are honest, so why should everyone else pay the price? We’re using all the resources available to track down cheats and make them face the consequences.

Catching cheats in action

We’re pinpointing benefit fraud across the country, region by region. Here are just a few of the methods we’re using to catch cheats:

  • fraud task forces targeting local areas
  • using hidden cameras
  • working closely with HMRC and local authorities
  • cross checking with banks and credit reference agencies
  • employing undercover mobile surveillance units

Tough penalties

People who are caught deliberately withholding information needed for their benefit claim are benefit cheats. They could face a range of consequences for their actions. For example:

  • having to pay all the money back
  • having their benefit stopped or reduced
  • having their home and/or possessions taken away
  • being given a criminal record
  • serving a prison sentence

Why spoil a good holiday?

Even law abiding claimants can come unstuck if they forget to tell us they are going on holiday. It is important you check how long you can be away for, because the time varies depending on which benefit you are claiming.
