The Rural Statement sets out Government’s support for rural areas, underling its commitment through the broad range of policies from across the different Government departments. It sets out a positive new agenda for Rural England, a contract with rural areas, so they can hold us to account on our promise to grow the rural economy and support thriving rural communities.

The Statement is based around three key priorities:

  • Economic Growth - we want rural businesses to make a sustainable contribution to national growth
  • Rural Engagement - we want to engage directly with rural communities so that they can see that Government is on their side; and
  • Quality of Life - we want rural people to have fair access to public services and to be actively engaged in shaping the places in which they live

The Rural Statement highlights what Defra is doing to champion rural needs and circumstances across government.
