The Merchant Shipping (Safety Standards for Passenger Ships on Domestic Voyages) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2022 update the technical requirements applicable to older UK domestic passenger vessels to bring their safety standards into line with modern passenger ships.

These revisions broadly cover the following crucial safety areas:

  • damage stability (survivability)
  • lifesaving equipment
  • fire detection
  • fixed firefighting
  • powered pumps
  • bilge alarms

These requirements are intended to be applied retrospectively to the domestic passenger fleet.
