This procedure and supporting guidance has been issued to assist police forces in formulating local policies and procedures for retrieving native video and audio from any CCTV system, and applies to all those who may need to retrieve CCTV footage.
It will help you:
- comply with the Forensic Science Regulator’s requirements for forensic science activities to be performed using approved processes and conducted by competent staff where accreditation to ISO 17025 is not mandated
- produce or approve processes, including choosing appropriate methods, for effective retrieval and subsequent processing of CCTV and its associated data
- understand the appropriate levels of training and competence for the various techniques
- make decisions about outsourcing forensic science activities which fall outside of force capabilities
This edition of the document follows on from ‘Retrieval of Video Evidence and Production of Working Copies from Digital CCTV Systems v2.0’. It has been updated to take account of the revised guidance on capture and handling of digital images for police applications given in the publication Digital Imaging and Multimedia Procedure v3.0 and Authorised Professional Practice. This document should be read in conjunction with other relevant publications as referenced in the text.
