Updated 11 June 2025
OVS note number: 2025/41
Date: 10/06/2025
1. Purpose
To inform you that imports of untreated wool and hair from ovine and caprine animals (GBHC 586) from Albania have been temporarily suspended in response to a recent outbreak of Peste des Petits Ruminants.
2. Background
Albania reported an outbreak of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) on 5 June 2025 to WOAH: WAHIS. This was confirmed on 4 June 2025 in a goat herd in Postribë, northern Albania.
The only relevant commodity currently approved for export from Albania to GB is untreated wool and hair from ovine and caprine animals. OVS note 2025/40 requested that consignments of these commodities be held while TARP safeguard measures were implemented to temporarily suspend imports of these commodities.
Safeguard declarations under the Trade in Animals and Related Products (2011) (and equivalent powers in Scotland and Wales) have now been published on our topical issues page to suspend imports into Great Britain of untreated wool and hair from ovine and caprine animals (GBHC 586) from the whole territory of Albania.
The following safeguard declarations give effect to these restrictions:
- Declaration of special measures: Albania (England)
- Declaration of special measures: Albania (Wales)
- Declaration of special measures: Albania: Peste des Petits Ruminants (Scotland)
These safeguard measures apply from 11 June 2025 and will continue to apply until they are revoked or amended.
