6 June 2025: Outbreak of peste des petits ruminants in Albania

Updated 6 June 2025

OVS note number: 2025/40

Date: 6 June 2025

Purpose

To inform you that, following an outbreak of peste des petits ruminants in Albania, imports of untreated wool and hair from ovine and caprine animals (GBHC 586) from Albania should be held while safeguard measures are implemented.

Background

Albania has reported an outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) on 5 June 2025 to World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH): WAHIS. This was confirmed on 4 June 2025 in a goat herd in Postribë, northern Albania.

The only relevant commodity currently approved for export from Albania to GB is untreated wool and hair from ovine and caprine animals.

The UK Office for SPS Trade Assurance is coordinating the delivery of safeguard declarations to prohibit the import from Albania of untreated wool and hair of ovine and caprine animals. A separate OVS note will be issued when this has taken place. In the meantime, any consignments from Albania of these commodities should be held.
