1.1 Jimmy Savile investigations final reminder: please report on your safeguarding actions by 15 June

In response to the Secretary of State’s request, a reminder to please report the actions your trust has taken in response to the recommendations in Kate Lampard’s report into themes and lessons learned from NHS investigations into matters relating to Jimmy Savile.

Please email your response and any questions to MonitorJSlearnings@monitor.gov.uk by 5pm Monday 15 June 2015.

With regard to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) requirements (recommendation 7), there is helpful guidance on NHS Employers’ website, which also includes links to the NHS employment check standards.

1.2 Medical directors and chief nurses – register for Monitor’s Clinical Advisory Forum (CAF) by 22 May

You should have received an invitation earlier this month from Hugo Mascie-Taylor, Medical Director and Executive Director of Patient and Clinical Engagement at Monitor, to register your interest in joining our Clinical Advisory Forum. Applications close at 5pm Friday 22 May.

As a member of this Forum, you will help to inform our policy and operational decisions on a wide range of issues, such as the NHS payment system and the approach we take to help improve provider performance.

2.1 Managing your agency spend – get in touch for advice

The increasing use of temporary nursing staff presents a challenge for many foundation trusts and other providers of NHS services. Our Agency Intensive Support Team is part of our new Provider Sustainability Directorate, and is dedicated to helping with this challenge by offering NHS foundation trusts effective support. If you are interested in finding out how the team can help your organisation, please email agencyprojectsupport@monitor.gov.uk.

We are also supporting workshops run by the NHS Commercial Alliance during June and July to inform you about a new staffing toolkit. The workshops and toolkit will provide practical advice, guidance and templates that you could use to help manage typical temporary staffing challenges.

2.2 Our business plan for 2015/16

We have published our business plan for 2015/16 which explains what we plan to do over the next 12 months to make the health sector work better for patients. The plan focuses on our role in working with you to address short-term operational improvement and longer-term sustainability.

3.1 Webinar: 2016/17 national tariff – work so far and next steps

27 May, 12 pm, online

For: anyone interested in the NHS Payment System, eg clinical directors, and finance directors and managers.

Why join? Ahead of our engagement document for the 2016/17 National Tariff Payment System being published, find out about the work that Monitor and NHS England have undertaken so far, and how and when you will be able to comment on the proposals.

In the webinar you will hear about the work packages highlighted in our blog post ‘The national tariff: strengthening transparency rigour’ and how these are being developed.

3.2 Monitor and NHS Providers Executive Director Induction Programme

11-12 June, London

For: newly appointed executive directors of foundation trusts.

Why attend? This interactive programme will give you a clear understanding of your role as part of a unitary board and of the wider context within which your role is set.

On the day:

  • gain a better understanding of the developing NHS environment and what it means for the leadership of foundation trusts, governance, NHS finance, and the regulatory context
  • get information that will help you with your role specifically within the foundation trust sector

Please note that this is a day and a half programme and participants are required to attend on both days.

3.3 Board Induction Day

25 June 2015, London (Monitor offices)

For: newly appointed chairs and chief executives of NHS foundation trusts who have not had prior experience of Monitor’s authorisation process.

Why attend? To meet with our development team and find out about our role as well as foundation trust governance and regulation.

On the day:

  • learn about Monitor’s role, including an overview of pricing and co-operation and competition
  • find out what the NHS foundation trust legal framework looks like
  • explore the regulatory regime, including the risk assessment framework and enforcement processes
  • learn about quality and quality governance
  • learn about foundation trust governance, including working effectively with governors
  • hear about current issues in the NHS

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis to chairs or chief executives of foundation trusts.

4.1 NHS Confederation Annual Conference and Exhibition

3-5 June 2015, Liverpool

4.2 Health and Care Innovation Expo 2015

2-3 September 2015, Manchester

For: chief executives and chairs of foundation trusts, NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups.

Why attend?
