Summary

Information regarding medical standards for existing fishermen eligible for grandfather rights is contained in MIN 575(F).

1. Introduction/background

1.1 Annex A to MSN 1886(M+F) sets out the medical fitness standards to which approved doctors must have regard when examining seafarers and fishermen for an ENG1 medical fitness certificate. They are also the relevant medical fitness standards for a ML5 medical certificate.

1.2 From 30 November 2023, all fishermen working on fishing vessels of any size must have a medical fitness certificate for the work that they do when the vessel is at sea. A medical certificate is not needed to work on a fishing vessel in port.

1.3 This notice gives information on the standards to be applied under grandfather rights for those persons who were fishermen when the regulations came into force in November 2018.

2. Grandfather rights

2.1 Notwithstanding Annex A to MSN 1886 (M+F), the medical standards in paragraphs 4.2.2(2) to 4.25 in Annex 1 to MIN 575 (F) are the medical fitness standards to which approved doctors and medical referees must have regard under the 2018 Regulations in respect of fishermen eligible for grandfather rights in accordance with MIN 575(F) Amendment 3 and until the end of the period specified in that MIN.
