MIN 724 (M) The sport or pleasure vessel code – standards and guidelines for best practice

Updated 6 March 2026

Summary

This Marine Information Notice is intended to supplement The Sport or Pleasure Vessel Code by providing a summary of standards referenced therein and guidelines considered as best practice for Small Commercial Vessels in commercial use for sport or pleasure operating at sea, which do not carry cargo, and carry not more than 12 passengers certified under this edition of the Code.

This M Notice is not exhaustive and shall be viewed as guidance only.

 1. Introduction/background

1.1 In 2025, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency published the Code of Practice for Small Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport or Pleasure (“The Sport or Pleasure Vessel Code”).

1.2 The Sport or Pleasure Vessel Code came into force on 12 December 2025, and it replaces:

a. The Safety of Small Commercial Motor Vessels – A Code of Practice Edition 1 (the “Yellow Code”)

b. The Safety of Small Commercial Sailing Vessels – A Code of Practice Edition 1 (the “Blue Code”)

c. The Safety of Small vessels in commercial use for Sport and Pleasure operating from a nominated departure point (NDP) (the “Red Code”)

d. MGN 280 Small Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport and Pleasure, Workboats and Pilot Boats – Alternative Construction Standards, in so far as it applies to Sport and Pleasure vessels.

e. The Code of Practice for Intended Pleasure Vessels in Temporary Commercial Use at Sea.

 2. Summary

2.1 The following is a summary of current standards and guidelines applicable to vessels certified under the Sport or Pleasure Vessel Code. All standards and guidelines listed are at the point of publication of this M Notice the most up to date version. Where a standard or guideline is no longer in date but is still referenced within the Code, it is the responsibility of the vessel owner/operator to use the latest edition.

2.2 Equivalent standards may be considered on a case-by-case basis subject to the approval of the Administration.

2.3 Numbering refers to applicable section reference(s) within the Code.
