This page sets out  information about competition winners and their training offer through the Home Decarbonisation Skills Training Competition.

Back 2 Work Complete Training

Work package 3: Heat pumps

Back 2 Work Complete Training have experience in delivering pre-employment training to individuals and have experience of working to support the unemployed into employment. They will offer training in:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps

The BESA Academy

Work package 3: Heat pumps

The BESA Academy is part of the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA), which is a membership organisation that supports and serves its members in the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, control and management of engineering systems and services in buildings.

The BESA academy will provide training to upskill qualified plumbing and heating engineers to correctly install domestic heat pumps in order to support high quality retrofit delivery. Their course includes:

  • Different types of Heat Pump systems
  • How to correctly specify and install low temperature heating systems
  • The importance of specifying the correct sizing of heat pump, collectors and emitters
  • How Air Source Heat Pumps operate
  • Commissioning and Handover Guidance
  • Maintenance
  • Practical Installation
  • End Point Assessment

CB Heating

Work package 3: Heat pumps

With over 20 years experience of working in the sector, CB Heating are looking to upskill current and new heating installers in heat pump technology. They will be offering training in the BPEC Level 3 Heat Pump course.

DMR Training and Consultancy Ltd.

Work package 2: Insulation

DMR Training and Consultancy Ltd. is an independent training company, specialising in providing tailored construction training solutions. They have extensive experience of construction and insulation training and assessment delivery across the sector. Available courses include:

  • NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 Insulation and Building Treatments
  • Level 3 Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings
  • Level 2 Award in Understand Domestic Retrofit

Elmhurst Energy

Work Package 1: Retrofit assessor and retrofit coordinator.

Elmhurst Energy is the UK’s largest accreditation scheme for energy professionals with over 25 years’ experience in training and accreditation. They will deliver Retrofit assessor training for new entrants and existing domestic energy assessors (DEAs).

Elmhurst’s training will be delivered online meaning that training will be available in all Local Net Zero Hub regions across England. Find out more at www.elmhurstenergy.co.uk.

Essex County Council

Work Package 1: Retrofit assessor and retrofit coordinator.

Through their training offer Essex County Council are looking to help individuals into sustainable employment within the labour market. The training will also help to develop the authority’s long term future retrofit offerings. Training will be delivered through Adult Community Learning Essex. Through the competition they will offer training in:

  • Level 2 Understanding Domestic Retrofit
  • Level 3 Retrofit Advisor
  • Level 4 Retrofit Assessor
  • Level 5 Retrofit Coordinator

Farnborough College of Technology

Work Package 3: Heat pumps

Farnborough College of Technology has a dedicated campus for construction (Aldershot College) which provides trade skills to prepare students for employment within the industry with courses and apprenticeships. The College will provide training to support the low carbon heating sector including:

  • LCL L3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems
  • Awareness of environment technologies
  • Electricity for Plumbers
  • LCL L2 Award in Principles of Metering for Renewable Heat Installations
  • Essential Electronics and Safe Isolation of Electrical Equipment

GTEC

Work package 3: Heat pumps

GTEC specialises in the provision of electrical, oil and renewable heating technologies and training. The GTEC Training Ltd courses focus on heat pumps with training covering:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps
  • Water Regulations
  • Hot Water Safety Systems (Unvented)
  • Manufacturers Commissioning (assessed outcome)
  • Low Carbon Heating and Hot Water system design
  • Safe isolation for plumbing / heating engineers
  • Energy Efficiency
  • MCS Made Easy

These courses aim to provide support at all stages of the installer journey, i.e. from initial enquiry through to successful certification.

Heat Geek

Work package 3: Heat pumps

Heat Geek gives expert advice on technical aspects of the heating industry to professionals and discerning end users. Heat Geek will offer training on Heat pumps covering Modern System Design for Heating and Renewables in Commercial and Domestic Buildings

Heat Geek aims to inform trainees about the relevant technologies, why they should excite them, how they operate and how to best install and integrate these technologies with existing systems.

Heat Geek’s training will be delivered online meaning that training will be available in all Local Net Zero Hub regions across England. Find out more at courses.heatgeek.com.

The Insulation Assurance Authority Commercial Services (IAACS)

Work packages 1, 2 and 3: Retrofit assessor and retrofit coordinator; insulation; heat pumps

The IAACS is the sister organisation of the Insulation Assurance Authority (IAA).

The IAACS delivers a range of commercial services including. Training, Testing and Retrofit Coordinator Services.

The IAACS will provide training in:

  • NVQ level 2 and level 3 Insulation and Building Treatments
  • Level  5 Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management
  • Understanding Domestic Retrofit
  • Air Source Heat Pumps

ISO Energy Ltd

Work Package 3: Heat pumps

ISO Energy is a heat pump installer company and will provide training on air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. The courses will teach trainees how the different technologies operate, key differences and installation considerations.

All courses will deliver a BPEC or LCL Awards qualification in the installation of air source or ground source heat pumps to individuals with existing skills and training to those new to the sector.

Qualifications on offer:

  • Level 3 Heat Pump Systems (non-refrigerant Circuits)
  • Level 3 Installation and maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems
  • Low Temperature Hot Water Heating Systems
  • Level 3 Surveying & Calculation of Building Heat Loss to BS EN12831
  • Level 3 Understanding Electrical Obligations for Heat Pump Installation

Net Zero Training

Work package 2 and 3: Insulation and heat pumps

Net Zero Training is collaborating with a range of delivery partners to offer a package of training across a number of sites in England. Partners include the City of Portsmouth College, Future IOW and Taunton and Bridgewater College. Available training includes:

North West Skills Academy

Work package 2: Insulation

The North West Skills Academy (NWSA) is a specialist construction training and assessment organisation established in 2013. NWSA will deliver the Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ in Insulation and Building Treatments.

Training will be delivered both online and face to face. It will be available in all Local Net Zero Hub regions across England. Find out more at www.lowcarbonacademy.co.uk.

Oil Firing Technical Association Limited (OFTEC)

Work package 3: Heat pumps

OFTEC is a competent person scheme which supports installers that are approved to install oil, solid fuel and renewable heating systems. Almost 10,000 technicians are registered with OFTEC’s UKAS accredited registration schemes to show their commitment to completing work that meets regional building regulations and industry best practice.

Through their offer they will provide training in:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps
  • Design of Heat Pump Systems

Optimum Energy Solutions UK

Work package 3: Heat pumps

Optimum Energy Solutions is an MCS accredited and TrustMark registered firm which promotes clean forms of renewable energy. The available courses include:

  • Level 3 Award in Heat Pump Systems
  • Level 3 Award in Air source Heat Pump Systems
  • Level 3 Surveying & Calculation of Building Heat Loss
  • Level 3 Award: Understanding Electrical Obligations for Heat Pump Installation

Options Skills

Work Package 3: Heat pumps

Option Skills specialise in electrical and gas & heating engineering training. These courses will upskill candidates to design and install heat pump systems and are open to existing gas engineers and plumbers. Option Skills will also help candidates to gain MCS certification.

The formal qualifications gained will be a minimum of 1 of the following:

  • Level 3 Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump (Air source and Ground source)
  • Level 3 in Low temperature Heating Design
  • Level 3 Water Regulations (WRAS)
  • Level 3 HWSS (Unvented Hot Water Systems)
  • Part L Building Regulations

Provincial seals

Work package 1 and 2: Retrofit assessor and retrofit coordinator and insulation

Provincial Seals Ltd is a network supplier of UKAS Accredited Insulation & Heating Systems to the UK’s energy efficiency industry and is part of the Green Deal First Group that provides an end-to-end process and support operation which helps new market entrants achieve certification, compliance, and competence standards.

Training delivery will cover both retrofit assessor & coordinator as well as insulation training. This includes:

  • Level 3 Retrofit Assessor training
  • Level 3 Energy Efficiency for Older & Traditional Buildings
  • NVQ Level 2 Cold Roof Insulation

Retrofit Academy

Work package 1: Retrofit assessor and retrofit coordinator

The Retrofit Academy is a not-for profit training company dedicated to improving the capabilities of the UK retrofit sector.

As part of their training package, they will deliver the following:

  • Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit
  • Level 3 Award in Domestic Retrofit Advice
  • Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment
  • Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management

Think Construction Skills

Work package 2: Insulation

Think Construction Skills Ltd (TCS) was established in October 2013 and provides a nationwide on-site assessment training for a wide range of construction based NVQs (levels 2 to 7) and has up-skilled several thousand learners through NVQ on-site assessments.

TCS will provide NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Insulation and Building Treatments. It will enable small and medium-sized enterprises to upskill their workforce and meet the requirements of PAS certification. TCS will deliver training across a range of insulation measures.
