Advice from healthcare professionals can affect whether people are absent from work, for how long and whether they take steps to return to work. Their advice also helps us to make sure disabled people receive the right support.

Diploma in Disability Assessment Medicine
The Diploma in Disability Assessment Medicine is a qualification introduced by the Faculty of Occupational for doctors who want to demonstrate a level of proficiency in disability assessment medicine. Their website includes the diploma regulations, reading list and guidance notes for candidates.
Health and work in general practice
The Royal College of General Practitioners runs half-day Health and work in general practice workshops to improve the way GPs deal with clinical issues relating to work and health.
Work and health – online learning
Health e-Working e-learning modules are designed to show healthcare professionals how to incorporate work and health issues into the daily management of patients.
Royal College of Psychiatrists – work and mental health
The Royal College of Psychiatrists provides information about returning to work after a period of mental ill health for workers, employers, clinicians and carers.
Long-term fluctuating health conditions – helping people stay in work
Work Life provides information for employers, employees and healthcare professionals to help people with long-term fluctuating health conditions stay in work, and lead an independent life.
Royal College of Surgeons – return to work guidance
The Royal College of Surgeons has a series of Get well soon leaflets that give patients practical advice on how to get back to their normal lives as quickly as possible. They include consensus-based return to work guidance. The leaflets were launched with funding from DWP.
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – post-operative recovery
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has a series of patient Recovering Well leaflets aimed specifically at women recovering from gynaecological surgery, to help them plan for a return to fitness, including work.
Concepts of rehabilitation – evidence base
The Concepts of rehabilitation report (2004) included an evidence base for the better management and rehabilitation of common health problems.

This independent review (2006) collated and evaluated evidence on the question Is work good for your health and well-being?
