This essay sets out the ways in which the future is considered in current city planning. It identifies some of the evidence and tools most frequently used to think about the long-term future of cities. It also acknowledges the challenges of thinking longer term. The paper draws on discussions, interviews and workshops held with city authorities and partner organisations.
The essay was commissioned as part of the Foresight future of cities project.
