Update: 18 July 2023

We have published the Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF): shortlisted applications.

BEIS is providing up to £120 million in funding to help mature potential nuclear projects ahead of the expected government process to select the next nuclear projects.

The aim of the FNEF is to help industry reduce project risks, so they are better positioned for future investment decisions. The FNEF is targeted at applicants that could be in a position to take a Final Investment Decision (FID) within the next parliament, subject to Value for Money and all relevant approvals.

We expect the fund to support a limited number of nuclear projects through grant funding to be awarded following a competitive process.

The Fund is now closed to applications.

Background

The FNEF was announced in the government’s 2021 Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener.

It is the first in a series of government interventions as set out in the 2022 British Energy Security Strategy.
