Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)

The Environment Agency will be reviewing and updating the flood risk management plans (FRMPs) for the:

  • river basin districts (RBDs) in England
  • English parts of the RBDs that lie partly in England and partly in Scotland or Wales

It will complete a Strategic Environmental Assessment and prepare an environmental report for each FRMP.

The Strategic Environmental Assessments will determine the likely significant environmental effects of the FRMPs. This is required for the Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations (SI 2004/1633) - Regulation 11(2)(b).

Flood risk management plan review

The FRMPs are:

Each updated FRMP will include, amongst other things:

  • an overview of flood risk in the RBD
  • objectives for managing flood risk in the RBD
  • the measures to be implemented to meet the objectives
  • how the measures will help to achieve the ambitions of the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy and the government’s environmental objectives
  • how and when the FRMP will next be reviewed
