Details

An ongoing independent evaluation of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games (“the Games”) and associated legacy programmes is being carried out with two main purposes:

  • to inform legacy programme delivery and ensure lessons can be learned for future Commonwealth Games and other mega events
  • to demonstrate accountability and transparency in the allocation of public funding by assessing whether the intended outcomes and impacts of the Games have been achieved

This report presents the output of Phase 2 of the Games-wide evaluation, providing a partial view of the overall impact of the Games, and sets out an interim assessment of the impact of the Games events on Birmingham, the West Midlands and wider UK.

The scope is solely focused on outcomes and impacts generated up to end September 2022 through the delivery of the Games events themselves, as a result of spending incurred between April 2018 and September 2022.

This interim evaluation reports on:

  • the short-term gross economic impacts in the form of GVA and employment generated through the planning and delivery of the Games events and through spending by Games-related visitors;
  • the potential longer-term economic impacts generated through skills initiatives, business investment and capital investment as a result of the planning and delivery of the Games events; and
  • the wider social and environmental impacts supported through the planning and delivery of the Games events.

The full breadth of activity associated with the Games, including the short-term legacy impacts of delivering the Games events and wider legacy programme activity, will be evaluated as part of the one year post Games evaluation (Phase 3 of the work).

The report published for Phase 1 of the evaluation, which set out the evaluation framework, baseline and methodology is available here.

A summary of the short term highlights of the Games was published in September 2022 and can be found here.
