Credit, debt and financial difficulty in Britain, 2012

This report presents findings from the 2012 DebtTrack survey and considers trends in key consumer debt indicators since 2008 to 2009.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

This report updates trend information on credit use and the extent of consumer indebtedness using data from the YouGov DebtTrack survey, an on-line survey carried out between February and November 2012.

The data for 2012 indicates:

  • a continued decrease in the proportion of households using unsecured credit and a flattening of demand for additional credit products
  • that the incidence of financial difficulty has levelled out after decreasing in previous years
  • about 1 in 10 households were either taking formal action on debt problems or were more than 3 months in arrears on payments
