Appendix C: deliberative workshops sampling and recruitment

Propeller Research’s network of around 1,600 recruiters across the UK contacted their pool of 360,000 pre-opted participants by email. Screening questions were sent to participants to assess their suitability for taking part in the research, and those who wished to take part returned their answers to recruiters. Recruiters then followed up by phone to verify responses. Once recruited, participants received an information sheet and privacy notice from Propeller.
All workshop communication was managed via mass emails. During onboarding, participants were offered support for both online and in-person attendance (for example, Zoom training and loan of devices). One week before each workshop, participants received the workshop agenda, meeting link, a Zoom guide, and a project contact. For Workshop 1, the information sheet, privacy notice, and a briefing document were sent, followed later by in-person event details. For Workshop 2, a session 2 briefing document was provided, while Workshop 3 had no additional materials. Propeller sent reminder emails in advance, with the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) sending an additional reminder on the morning of each workshop (the day before for the in-person event).
After the final workshop, participants received a thank-you email, expense claim guidance, and Love-2-Shop vouchers. Propeller Research then deleted all collected data once the project concluded.
