Published 28 November 2025
Applies to England, Scotland and Wales
Situation
APHA, HSE, BSAVA and the human Brucella Reference Lab (Liverpool) have collaboratively produced guidance on risks and control measures in veterinary practices for Brucella canis.
Details
The guidance provides information for veterinary practices that can be used to help in the assessment of risks and implementation of control measures to control exposure of veterinary personnel to Brucella canis (B.canis).
It advises practices in situations where infection with B. canis:
• is known or suspected in a dog
• becomes apparent or suspected during a consultation or procedure and also, where there is potential for the risk level to change
APHA’s Summary Information Sheet (SIS) has also been updated.
