The Herbal Medicines Working Group included representatives from the main herbal traditions and supported Professor Walker in his analysis of the issues and possible solutions.

The recommendations of the report are mainly giving advice to the government on how the sector may be regulated to keep the public safe.

The government will consider the advice and recommendations.

The UK Herbal Medicines Advisory Committee (HMAC) report on “Safety, regulation and herbal medicines: a review of the evidence” was prepared by HMAC for the Herbal Medicines and Practitioners Working Group (HMPWG). The review summarises evidence in the public domain relating to the safety of herbal medicines and herbal medicines practice.

HMAC provides advice to Minsters and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on the safety and quality of herbal medicinal products. The Committee consists of representatives of the main strands of herbal practice, as well as lay members.
