Annex B: grant allocations

Updated 1 July 2022

Applies to England

Source data

Care Quality Commission (CQC) care directory with filters, January 2021. The small number of care home beds assigned to Flintshire or unspecified are excluded from the calculation.

Number of residential drug and alcohol services beds (data held by CQC as at 7 January 2021). Beds within residential drug and alcohol services are not recorded as care home beds within the CQC directory, so we have indicated the bed numbers we have used for these services in the allocations table.

Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) area cost adjustment (ACA). Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council and Dorset council (both created in April 2019) have been assigned an ACA of 1 as their predecessor councils of Bournemouth, Poole, and Dorset County Council all had an ACA of 1.

Method

The total grant (£149 million) is allocated on the basis of the number of care home beds and the potential numbers of users of residential alcohol and drug services in each local authority.

The allocation shares for each local authority for care homes are calculated as [(number of care home beds + number of residential drug and alcohol services beds) * [ACA] / England sum of [(number of care home beds + number of residential drug and alcohol services beds) * ACA].

The ACA reflects differences in wages and prices in different local authorities.

Note

It is expected that each care home should receive an amount per CQC-registered bed and residential alcohol and drug services beds, representing 80% of the funding. The remaining 20% is to be allocated for local authorities’ discretionary use to support the care sector to operationally deliver LFD testing.
