UK ratifies Montenegro’s membership of NATO

Ambassador Whitting met Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Đukanović today in Podgorica, to hand over a letter from Foreign Secretary, Mr Boris Johnson MP about Montenegro’s NATO accession.

They were joined by the Defence Attaché to Montenegro Col. Simon Fitzgibbon.

In his letter, the Foreign Secretary informed the Prime Minister that the UK had completed the process to ratify Montenegro’s accession to NATO and that the UK is looking forward to welcoming Montenegro as the 29th NATO ally in 2017.

The Foreign Secretary also stressed that the UK is keen to strengthen bilateral relations, in particular in the rule of law reform, tackling organised crime and corruption and institutional capacity building.

The meeting also covered a range of areas where the two countries are cooperating effectively already, and with excellent future prospects.

On this occasion, Ambassador Whitting said:

I am delighted the UK has now ratified Montenegro’s accession to NATO and very keen to strengthen our practical cooperation in the key areas mentioned in the Foreign Secretary’s letter.
