Department of Health responds to the overnight closure since November of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department at Pontefract Hospital

The Accident and Emergency (A&E) department at Pontefract Hospital has been closed overnight since November, which the trust say is due to a national shortage of emergency doctors.

In response, a Department of Health spokesperson said:

“The number of doctors is rising - we have 3,700 more doctors since May 2010, and the number of those specialising in emergency medicine is going up. We are working with the College of Emergency Medicine to ensure that high quality doctors are recruited and appropriately trained as well as increasing the number of doctors in the specialty of emergency medicine.”
