They discussed a range of issues of vital importance to both countries, including counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics cooperation and combating illegal migration.

Theresa May said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Hina Rabbani Khar to the Home Office. Pakistan is one of the UK’s key allies in the fight against terrorism and we are also continuing to work very closely with Pakistan to tackle illegal immigration from the country.’

The Home Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed widening women’s participation in economic and public life. The Home Secretary congratulated the Foreign Minister on the ‘Prevention of Anti-Women Practices Act’ passed by Pakistan last year which tackled discrimination.

Status of Women

They agreed that next week’s UN Commission on the Status of Women meeting, in New York, would be an excellent opportunity to work together to progress women’s participation and their economic contribution to their communities worldwide.
