Human Rights Council 39: UK Statement on Cameroon

The UK praised Cameroon's recent steps towards eliminating the worst forms of child labour, but raised its concerns over increased violence and growing humanitarian challenges.

Human Rights Council Chamber

Thank you, Mr President,

The UK hopes that Cameroon will support our UPR recommendations.

We welcome the positive steps taken by Cameroon to grant the ICRC access to Anglophone leaders who were extradited from Nigeria in January 2018. We urge further and repeated access for the ICRC, in addition to legal, medical and family access.

The UK is concerned by increasing violence in Cameroon and welcomes the announcement from Cameroon that it will investigate fully reported human rights violations depicted in a recent online video. We encourage active steps by Cameroon to ensure accountability for human rights violations and abuses.

The UK welcomes the serious approach Cameroon has outlined to eliminating the worst forms of child labour. We urge full and effective implementation of the 2017 National Action Plan to tackle this challenge and ensure the worst forms of child labour are effectively prosecuted.

We remain concerned about the growing humanitarian challenges in Cameroon. We call on Cameroon to grant and facilitate unhindered humanitarian assistance to provide relief for the affected population, wherever this may be required, including in the Anglophone regions.

Thank you, Mr President.
