Guatemalan Congresswoman joins International Women MPs conference in London

Congresswoman Andrea Villagran is participating in the conference to discuss how to strengthen visibility, and further empower women parliamentarians to continue to drive change in Guatemala and internationally.

This historic event, taking place on November 8 at the House of Commons in the centenary year of women’s suffrage in the UK, will bring together female Members of Parliament from around the world to celebrate their achievements.

Congresswoman Villagran stands out for her tireless work on fighting corruption, her work with youngsters and promoting women’s participation in politics. The conference aims to build capacity to advocate for greater representation of women in parliament and public life, as well as exploring the specific challenges facing women MPs and how they might be overcome.

Congressional representatives will also discuss how to tackle violence against women and girls, and ways to identifying opportunities for women’s economic empowerment. This historic event will create an active network of women parliamentarians around the world, providing opportunity for impactful international collaboration, and build a blueprint for further coordination.

The event is hosted by The Secretary of State for International Development, Penny Mordaunt and The Minister for Women and Equalities, Harriet Harman QC MP, Mother of the House of Commons. The female MPs were welcomed by the Prime Minister, Theresa May, at a Reception in No. 10 Downing Street on November 7.
