Foreign Secretary welcomes final political settlement for Libya

Philip Hammond calls for Libyans to work together to build a better future

I welcome the announcement by UN Special Representative Bernardino León of details of the final political settlement. After many months of negotiations, during which the situation in Libya has deteriorated, this represents a genuine opportunity for the parties to resolve the political and security situation in Libya. I urge them to seize this moment by endorsing and signing the Political Agreement, and working together to support the Prime Minister and other members of the Presidential Council to quickly form a Government of National Accord.

I call on all Libyans, representatives of the people, political parties, municipalities and civil society, to unite wholeheartedly and in a spirit of reconciliation behind this settlement, which fairly and comprehensively represents the aspirations and hopes of the Libyan people. It is the only way forward for Libya. It is important to set aside differences and work together to support a new government to restore security, establish stability and regenerate the economy, for the benefit of all Libyans. Those who threaten to use violence or seek to block this settlement risk undermining an agreement which has the clear backing of the majority of the Libyan people. The international community remains fully prepared to take measures against them.

As soon as Mr Seraj’s government is confirmed, I look forward to working with them to help build a peaceful and prosperous Libya.
