Foreign Secretary William Hague said:

I warmly congratulate H.R.H Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein оn his appointment as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This is a critical role to which Prince Zeid brings extensive expertise and a strong commitment to human rights and international criminal justice. We wish him every success and look forward to working with him.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Navanethem Pillay for her considerable achievements during her six years as High Commissioner. She has made an invaluable contribution to countries working to improve their human rights record, and in calling to account nations that commit serious and systematic violations against their citizens.
