Foreign Secretary welcomes appointment of Prince Zeid as new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said:
I warmly congratulate H.R.H Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein оn his appointment as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This is a critical role to which Prince Zeid brings extensive expertise and a strong commitment to human rights and international criminal justice. We wish him every success and look forward to working with him.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Navanethem Pillay for her considerable achievements during her six years as High Commissioner. She has made an invaluable contribution to countries working to improve their human rights record, and in calling to account nations that commit serious and systematic violations against their citizens.
- Prince Zeid, the new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, will lead efforts to promote and protect human rights throughout the world and to strengthen the ability of the UN system as a whole to respond to human rights situations of concern.
