FCO Minister condemns attacks ahead of elections in Iraq

Hugh Robertson condemns attacks on Iraqi polling stations and calls for elections to be inclusive.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Commenting on attacks over recent days in Iraq, Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for the Middle East Hugh Robertson said:

I condemn the cowardly attacks that have taken place against polling stations and election rallies ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary elections tomorrow. Yesterday’s attacks killed over 50 Iraqis, many of them members of the security forces taking part in preliminary voting.

The UK stands by the people of Iraq at this crucial time for their country. I commend the efforts of the Independent High Electoral Commission and the Iraqi Security Forces to enable the elections to be held on time. It is vital that the elections are credible, transparent and inclusive.
